The activity will provide a flexible, sensory-informed and inclusive environment, allowing children to participate at their own pace, make choices about their involvement and engage in ways that reflect their individual needs and preferences.

It is specifically designed to support children who may experience differences in sensory processing, communication, attention, social interaction and emotional regulation.

Our proposed activity, Create, Explore and Connect – An Inclusive Sensory Creative Space, is designed for autistic and neurodivergent children and their families. It will provide a calm, welcoming and flexible creative environment where children can explore art through their senses and participate in ways that feel comfortable to them.

The main art forms will be painting, collage and mixed-media sensory art. Children and families will be able to use paint, brushes, and sponges for finger painting. They will also have access to tactile materials such as fabric, beads, shells, feathers, textured paper and other sensory resources. Children will be encouraged to choose the materials, colours and textures they prefer and use them to create individual or shared pieces of artwork.

The activity will promote inclusion, belonging and connection by providing a shared, supportive and non-judgemental environment where children and families can enjoy creative activities together. It will also encourage creative self-expression, sensory exploration, confidence, emotional regulation and positive interaction, while recognising and valuing different ways of communicating, participating and engaging.
